Having many nationalities onboard has become widespread on many ships. This imposes great demands on communication and understanding of differences. Thus, this lecture will try to define the notion of culture and raise the awareness of the importance of cross-cultural competences in the maritime industry and especially onboard vessels. It will also address the danger and necessity of stereotypes and some of the prejudices in the maritime field about different nationalities, illustrated by several contrast-culture scenarios and case studies of life onboard. The lecture will also provide a brief overview of different culture theories and give suggestions of how they can be used as background knowledge in dealing with individuals from different cultures.
